Morning Walks

The kids and I go for a walk around the entire town every morning. It takes about an hour, which is good because they get into much less trouble when they're moving. On today's walk we found a dead smashed crab on the side of the road and I took the trouble of pointing it out to the girls so they would know what would happen to them if they ran out in the street. I recognize a good teaching moment when I see one! Well, Rivka's brow furrowed and she thought about that poor crab for a few blocks and I was wondering if maybe the analogy was a bit too gory for her. Then she asked me:

"Do crabs have chin eggs?"

"I don't know honey. What are chin eggs?"

"Its when they split open."

"When what splits open?"

"The chin eggs!" (She was pretty exasperated that I wasn't getting it.)

"You never told me what chin eggs are."

Sigh. In a condescending tone- "When the little crab eggs hatch out they split the eggs open like chins."

"Ohhhh... you mean like when you split your chin open?" (I'm a little slow.)

"Yeah, and so do crabs and eggs." (She then rolled her eyes at me like I was the dumbest person in the world. The logic of a three-year-old takes me a while to grasp.)

On a different walk a few days ago we passed by the local high school while they were have P.E. Some kids were playing soccer and the rest were running laps around the field. Then I noticed that about half the kids weren't wearing any shoes. And most of the shoeless ones were girls. The only thing I can figure is that all of them can only afford one pair of shoes and girls usually wear sandals- not tennis shoes. If it were me, though, I would rather run in my flip flops than barefoot.

Rivka is very bright to put all that together. Good you wrote that conversation all down. She is going to love reading it when she is older!
